Cathy's 1960 Chevrolet Corvair
July 29th, 2005
We went after the fading paint on the Corvair today. Many, many years in the Arizona sun left significant oxidation on the painted surfaces of the car. At first, we went after it with a power buffer and rubbing compound. That had very little results. We thought that something more abrasive was in order. We decided to try steel wool on a small area and the results were promising so we used it on all painted surfaces to take alot of the oxidation off. There still isn't a great shine, but the car is blue again.

Cathy's Corvair entered the Sycamore "Turnin' Back Time" car show today. We had to get there very early to get a prime location on State street but it paid off when we saw Cathy's car on the front page of the Daily Chronicle the next day!!! Here is a link to the story : http://www.daily-chronicle.com/articles/2005/08/01/news/news02.txt
There were more than 800 cars entered but we only found two Corvairs.

The antique plates came in for the car today. What do you think?

We received another package from Clark's Corvair Parts today. There were some good restoration parts inside including a new front grill badge and this new bowtie mirror.
August 25th, 2005
The package area was the next area up for restoration. After removing all of the old material (remember how bad it looked?), we installed new seatback carpet, package area flooring, back wall and side trim. It sure looks alot better now!
Then we replaced the old and badly damaged front kick panels and lubed up the vent control cables.

The damaged rear air grill was taken off and straightened.
We used a rubber mallet to put it back in to shape. Hopefully, we can spend some more time on it in the future
to make it really straight.

We took the Corvair to Booth's Hot Rod Shop in DeKalb a few days ago. They wasted no time getting started. This is the progress made in three days. They said that there was just a little touch up painting that had been done in the past and that there was some minor damage done to the rear valance. They patched it all up and are having the paint manufacturers come by in a few days to match the color with the car and the paint code on the numbers plate. If you like the work that they are doing and have a car that needs paint, contact us and we can give you their number.

Back to the body shop today. The car has been primed and the first sanding is under way. They will prime and sand again before they apply the paint. Also, some pictures of all of the body parts that came off.

We are getting closer to the finished product. The under hood and trunk areas were masked off to be painted today to prepare them for painting. They will be painted today and left to dry over the weekend.

The car is just about all buffed out. Cathy saw it for the first time today and was very excited. A little more buffing, adding the trim, windows and it will be done!
